Mums are always putting everyone else first, and their own needs are often at the bottom of the to-do list.

Couple that with 'mum guilt' for taking time out for yourself and it's no wonder that many of us find it hard to take regular exercise.

But here's the thing: if you can secure a window to work out regularly, then it's going to benefit you and your family.

Here are some reasons why mums need exercise...

You'll sleep better and be less stressed

Regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality, particularly deep sleep, which is the type our body needs to restore and repair.

It's also great for lowering stress levels, and the good news is, even a short 15 minute walk is enough to lift our mood. This is because when we exercise, the body releases feel-good endorphins, making us feel happier, calmer and more patient with those around us.

It gives you energy

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for increasing our energy levels and you don’t need to do a lot to reap the benefits.

A University of Georgia study found that just 20 minutes of low intensity exercise could decrease fatigue by up to 65%! So how does exercise actually increase energy?

There’s a lot of amazing things going on in the body during a workout: when we exercise, our body increases its production of serotonin, endorphins and dopamine — all of which are powerful mood boosters.

Dopamine, in particular, has been found to boost alertness and motivation.

It models healthy habits to your children

You have probably noticed that kids love to copy, and that includes healthy habits, too. By exercising you are showing them that your health and fitness is a priority.

That sends an important message that it's OK to take care of yourself and do things that make you feel good and strong. You are also showing them how to live an active lifestyle, which is hopefully something they will continue into adulthood.
